I’m Stopping Blogging…

about Blogging at ThomasSinfield.com.
I have been thinking about things and discussing ideas with a few other bloggers, and have come to the decision that starting a blog about blogging with my name as the domain name probably wasn’t the smartest idea. I always aimed to create my blog to be a valuable business - but […]

RSS Feed Count. Got Some Ideas…Need Some More!

Posted In: Blogging January 29, 2008

I started this blog back in about August last year and since then I have increase my feed count from 0 too 106. I know its a good start but I want more. I once got told:

Be happy with your current situation but never satisfied. Because when you are satisfied you never want anything more.

I started this year with 88 RSS feed subscribers and the following goals:

  • 150 Subscribers by the end of February
  • 500 Subscribers by the end of the year

I set these goals to stretch me. I didn’t want to make easy goals, I wanted goals that would make me think, and plan and act. So obviously I am in the situation now where I have look at ways to build my rss feed count and I want to do so creatively.

Here are 4 Ways I Thought To Increase Your RSS Feed Count

1. Have Great Content

I know this is a simple one and one I have not mastered yet, but great content doesn’t have to be unique content. What great content is, is content that makes people stay. It could be:

  • A hot topic spun in an interesting way.
  • Controversy - Find out what the probloggers are saying and say the complete opposite
  • In depth reviews and opinions
  • Your humour

2. Be Active In Your Niche

A great example of this point is Caroline Middlebrook. She quit her job at the end of August last year and started documenting her online money making journey at her blog - so she started blogging the same time as me. Yet if you look at her stats you will see that she has over 1300 RSS feed subscribers! How did she get so many subscribers compared to me?

Well she does my first point extremely well! She has very in depth and helpful content, but I think the main this is that she is very active in her niche. I started noticing her comments on a lot of the blogs that I visited. Not just little ‘nothing’ comments, but well thought out and constructive comments that benefited both the writer of the blog and their visitors.

All her hard work and effort commenting didn’t go unnoticed with both ProBlogger and Yaro Starak - among other bloggers, both writing blog posts about her and her commenting habits.

3. Give Something Away

Offer a gift to the people who subscribe to your blog. The best way of doing this is giving away a product to anyone who subscribes via email (if you know a better way let me know!) - this allows you to verify that they do in fact subscribe. But You could work on an honesty policy.

What Can You Use As Gifts?

Anything that is of value to your readers. I great gift is ebooks. Preferably something you have written because then it is unique, but if not there are a lot of master resell rights available on ebooks.

4. Competitions

I have run a couple of competitions my latest one being my most successful where the winner won a copy of the Premium News Wordpress Theme - this was something that I had won and so didn’t cost me anything.

Competitions are something that I am wanting to focus more on this coming year as I have seen some very well done completions bring in some good results - specifically the Shoemoney v John Chow and the WinningTheWeb v Tyler Cruz competitions.

I am talking with a few other bloggers at the moment about a possible competition and hopefully something good will come from that.

Well those are a few of my ideas about gaining RSS feed readers. If you have any other ideas or comments on what I have mentioned let me know below!

Forum memberships can be extremely helpful to drawing traffic and gaining readers. If you are a respected member of a board you can use your advice, and information to draw readers to your site by putting a link in the signature of your posts.

But remember to be responsible in your posting because it could also distract users form viewing your site jusst as easily as it can bring them to it.

Great list. To increase your subscribers, I would suggest not only being active in your niche but also expanding. For every niche there are thousands blogs. Always search for new ones. You can help them get popular and they will probably subscribe.

Some great points. I need to increase my RSS readers also. The best way I suppose is to be active in blogs and forums and participate in the coversations, not just throwing in a one line comment just to get your blog noticed.
If you leave a good quality comment on a blog and a good quality reply in a forum, people will think that this guys site maybe worth checking out and subscribing to.

One idea is encourage people to subscribe to your email notification list. Only people on the list get the password to a weekly password protected post. This isn’t rss, but some people prefer email instead.

Your GodTeens blog looks like you are off to a good start. Keep up the good work.

Thomas - just found your link over at www.buzzbop.com, and as a newbie to the blogosphere I’m finding your content to be pertinent and meaningful. Thus, I’m happy to help you reach your goal of 150 RSS subscribers by the end of this month, so look for my email subscription.
    Keep blogging!

Being active in other places about your niche sure does help. I have been active in Open Source forums gaming sites for a while and that really helped to kick start things for me.
